In botany, the term strain refers to variations found within plant cultivars. It also refers to the offspring that descend from modified plants. These plants are either produced by biotechnological methods or through regular breeding. Hemp is a strain of the cannabis sativa plant that is bred for industrial purposes. The recent demand for CBD products has led to hemp being bred to create strains that are extremely high in CBD and low in THC. Only hemp strains that have less than 0.3% THC content are legal in the US.
